Civil War Insignia

C&C Sutlery carries a full line of brass hat insignia, embroidered insignia, shoulder boards, collar stars, chevrons, and corps badges.

On 21 March 1863 each member of a corps in the Army of the Potomac was assigned a unique insignia to wear on his cap, front or side or left breast so that he could be identified easily on the battlefield. The identification insignia idea was adopted by Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker after he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac, so any soldier could be identified at a distance. Maj. Gen. Daniel Butterfield, Hooker's chief of staff, was assigned the task of designing a distinctive shape for each corps badge. Butterfield also designated that each division in the corps should have a variation of the corps badge in a different color generally red for the first division, white for the second division and blue for the third division. Corps with added divisions used green for the fourth and orange for the fifth divisions.. The Union Army fielded 25 corps, each designated with a roman numeral, i.e., IX Corps.  From The Complete Civil War: The Definitive Fact File of the Campaigns, Weapons, Tactics, Armies, and Key Figures by Philip Katcher, Cassell  and Co. 2003.

Circlet1boards Insignia - US Officer Circlet cuff boards - Pair
$12.95

Circlet Rank Insignia

The regulation overcoat for officers was a dark blue while that for the enlisted men was light blue. This was no problem for the peacetime army, but in wartime it made targets of the officers. In 1861 officers were permitted to acquire mounted enlisted men's overcoats. Shoulder straps were not worn on overcoats and adding sleeve braid would be difficult in the field. Worn on the sleeve of the Sky Blue Great Coat just above the cuff.  Circlets appear in the Schuyler, Hartley and Graham catalog and were worn by some officers to indicate their grade. Another example of an original can be seen in Don Troiani's Soldiers in America. Also examples of officers wearing them under there coat lapel has been noted.

The circlet reappears around 1867 in the Indian Wars on the Frontier though these also do not appear in the U.S. Army Regulations and photos show that they were worn on the sleeve of the Sky Blue Great Coat just above the cuff

Hospital Stewards were among the highest pay enlisted men at $30 a month and were considered to have a very responsible position. They assisted the regiment surgeon, acted as dressers and dispensed medication. Many of them had some medical background. Army regulations specified that men selected as hospital stewards had to be of good character: "temperate, honest, and in every way reliable, as well as sufficiently intelligent, and skilled in pharmacy". Temperance was an important quality since one responsibility of the hospital steward was controlling and dispensing medicinal whiskey. As he was responsible for keeping many medical records, the steward also needed to be literate and intelligent.
