This Meat Can was standard issue during the Indian War in 1872. The Board of Officer's recommended this container to hold the issue of meat ration for Infantry and Cavalry. The intention of this can was keep the meat ration clean, and to prevent grease from ruining the haversack. This specific piece was designed to fit into the rectangle pocket inside of the 1872 Type I haversack. This model was later replaced with the 1874 Meat Can. Imported. |
