Civilian Sack Coat - Southern Cotton Sack |
|
Now Available in Cotton Canvas to keep you cooler in the summer! Cotton was used in place of wool in the south due to lower price and availability compared to wool. Cotton was also used during the 1870-1890's in the west as men's fashion because of its affordability. The Cotton Sack is a great option for your southern impression. Changing out the buttons for your state's buttons will give you a great look for a militia coat for the mid to late war period. The cotton canvas in all available colors is hand dyed to give you a more historically accurate impression. This Sack Coat is a civilian style typical of the common man, farmer or shopkeeper from 1850 - 1890's. The Civilian Sack Coat is made of cotton canvas and features canvas covered buttons with HAND STITCHED button holes. It has a lay down collar, a two button non-functional cuff, two front outside pockets, and is lined in a muslin lining. There is one inside pocket. Available in a variety of colors. This coat is 100% cotton and some shrinkage may occur. We recommend Dry Cleaning for these coats. If you plan to machine wash, please order 1-2 sizes larger. Click on the picture for more images. Despite what you may have read, they are not called “sack coats” because they are oversized, loose, or otherwise fit like a sack, nor is it because there is no “front dart.” Sack, sac, sacque, etc. all refer to the way the back (not the front) of the jacket is cut; i.e. “sack cut.” This simply means the back is formed of two pieces only, cut relatively straight down, instead of being made up of four curved pieces with hidden pockets in the tails as on more formal and traditional coats, such as tail coats, morning coats, and frocks.
