US Shell Jacket - New York State Militia - Artillery |
|
New York State militias and volunteers were issued distinctive uniforms instead of the US Government issued uniforms. The New York State Coat was adopted in April 1861 replacing the Frock Coat. Distinctive features of this 8-button front Infantry shell jacket are the piped stand up collar, piped shoulder straps, and a single piped belt keeper loop on the left side. The tube sleeve has a non-functional cuff decorated with 2 buttons. This shell jacket uses New York State buttons. The bottom front edge is slightly curved. The jacket is lined with muslin and has an inside pocket. An exterior 'slash' left breast pocket at the forth button, inverted 'V" piping at the cuff, a 9-button front, or piping down the jacket front are options.
